To bring our trip to an end, the family went to Deception Pass, one of my favorite places in Washington. Deception Pass is absolutely beautiful and worth the drive. White sandy beaches, tide pools, a great view of the ocean, pretty much everything you could wish for in a beach. The best part is that we had almost an entire spot of the beach to ourselves. We were able to run and play on our own little strip of sand for a majority of the day.
From throwing each other into the water, building sandcastles, burying Ashlyn, and hosting our own beach Olympic games, we played the day away. The boys played chicken, the girls daintily put our feet in the water. All was perfect. We caught crabs, hermit crabs, and Mitch even swam out to bring drift wood into the beach for us to play with. We laid down and let the tides sweep us around the sand, and at times the tide was so large, waves came toppling over us. The only downside to the entire day was not finding more creatures in the tide pools, but even then, we've all seen what a star fish looks like, right?
The boys' favorite part of the entire day quite possibly could have been throwing fruit snacks off of a bridge and trying to hit things with them. My favorite part of the day was just getting to relax and let loose, as you can tell by the pictures of me being a complete dork. I also loved getting to see Zane try to do everything that the older boys were doing. It was adorable in degrees immeasurable.
After the beach, we went to Fort Casey and played capture the flag. I didn't personally participate because I was too puckered out from being a wild animal on the beach. The fort was really cool, but eerie. The fort was last "used" during WWII, I believe, so there wasn't any electricity in the entire thing and it honestly looked like a torture chamber in some parts of the fort. There were entire rooms that were pitch black and gave me the heebie jeebies - another reason I wasn't too interested in playing capture the flag.
This family vacation was just what the doctor ordered for a couple of farmer-tanned-Holts. Thank goodness we may be coming back to Washington permanently so that I can soak up this ocean and beach countless other times. For now, it is goodbye for the rest of the year.
I love you, Deception Pass!
