Man, 9 Year-Olds Love Me

As a new teacher, Valentine's Day is perhaps one of the most stressful parts of teaching. Perhaps that stems from my 4th graders talking about how amazing their Valentine's parties were the years before or how their teacher decorated the classroom, and I'm just going to be honest: I'm not that kind of teacher. I wish I was, but I'm not going to take the time to streamer-ify the classroom for a ONE HOUR PARTY. I love my students, but I'm not going to make life harder than it has to be, especially for Valentine's Day where they really only care about the candy when all is said and done.
And then there is also the fact that I came in half-year and don't really know any of my room moms and they don't really know me. So asking them for help was awkward and I wasn't honestly sure what to ask them to do. Like, can you please make everything that looks cute on pinterest and do crowd control on 22 rabid 9-year-olds while they play games?
However, my natural pessimistic side was quieted when my room moms totally took charge and told me they would handle everything! They are earth angels. Serious earth angels.
I was able to sit and relax and on February 13th, I realized I not only hadn't picked up Valentine's yet, but I also hadn't made my box. Do teachers even make boxes? I don't know, but I spent that evening crafting away to make myself the perfect Valentine's Day box and Valentines.
The box was amazing. It was a Love Machine (aka, a robot) and it looked awesome, but I somehow forgot to take an actual picture of it???
On Valentine's Day, I was spoiled rotten by my kiddos, by my husband, and by my room moms. Two students brought me balloons. One student brought me a stuffed animal. Another student brought me a coupon for a cupcake, and the rest showered me with enough candy to give me diabetes. For lunch, the principal had pizza brought in.
Honestly, it was heaven on earth. 9 year olds love me. I was the life of the party that the room moms set up. The minute-to-win-it game where you have to shake the ping pong balls out of the kleenex box? Yeah, I totally failed at that and my students probably saw me shake it in ways that should never be shaken in a public school, but I got those ping pong balls out! Valentine's Day feels very rewarding when you've got 22 nine-year-olds constantly bringing you goodies, and then you come home to a husband that keeps the love going.
In our own Valentine's celebration, Mitch, Zane, and I made homemade pizzas that were heart-shaped. Zane loved to help and it was adorable watching him. He has really started to love helping, especially when we are cooking and making pizzas was no different.
He rolled out that dough for probably 30 minutes before we could switch him out for a new dough ball. He melts my heart, that little guy! Bad mom strikes again and I didn't take any pictures of the finished pizzas. Probably because we were so hungry after making them (ahem, Zane rolling out each dough ball) that we devoured them the instant they cooled down.
I hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day and you felt showered in love like I did!
